In Vermont by the 3rd week in October our wonderful autumn in the mountains is fading fast. The reds, yellows, oranges, greens, and ambers are muted and somewhat monochromatic in the landscape – the leaves take on a “salmony/tea-stained” hue – but this is the perfect opportunity to create a sweet and romantic bouquet. My latest bouquet was for a dear friend who re-discovered her childhood sweetheart at age 60! And now they are going to really be living the “happily ever after” fairy tale love story.

This palette is perfect for late fall- pinks, creams, oranges, whites, and a touch of green. Baby roses, tulips, ranunculous, Victorian stock, and the last of the dahlias picked that very morning from my garden in vibrant shades of fuchsia and burgundy made this bouquet stand out against the changing natural backdrop. The final touch of double faced satin gold/amber ribbon mixed with a sheer girly pink gave the arrangement the romance that it deserved.

The most important accessory to any bouquet is, of course, beautiful ribbon. There are so many resources available, but I have my favorites – our motto at Perennial Studio is ” Life is too short to buy cheap ribbon” . Here are a few of my favorites -and – if you can’t order it directly from the source, you can always order it through me. I love the ribbons from “Bellocchio” in San Francisco – Claudia Schwartz is a magnificent world class shopper for fabulous ribbon and accessories (www.bellocchio.com ) – I highly suggest a visit to her wonderful shoppe filled with treasures from France and many parts of Europe – it just screams quality! Another wonderful option is Renaissance Ribbons (www. renaissanceribbons.com) for artistic, colorful, and unusual flora and fauna patterns. Of course, Midori ribbon always has the most luxurious double faced satin in a rainbow of colors – so wonderful to feel your hands around when walking down the aisle (www.midoriribbon.com). Finally, for old- school velvets, vintage jacquards, and crisp taffetas, you can’t beat Hyman Hendler (www.hymanhendler.com)

One of the most amazing flowers that is easy to grow in Vermont is The Peony. Visually, this flower has quite an impact! It is truly one of my favorites to use in bouquets and centerpieces. With colors ranging from whites and creams to hot pink and magenta ( also, specialty cultivars come in shades of apricot, green, yellow, and chocolate!) this perennial flower is incredibly versatile – from a “simple” country wedding in a rustic birch container to an elegant affair presented in a silver or copper vessel – you will be more than mesmerized at it’s incredible beauty. The season for the Peony lasts about 6 – 8 weeks – starting in mid spring ( May) and possibly going through the first part of July, depending on the weather – they do not like the heat!

Lovely in a bridal bouquet – the buds are wonderful for boutonnieres – and centerpieces will “wow” your guests when filled with these luscious blooms. Personally, I am so enchanted by peonies that I named my first horse, a lovely Morgan Mare “Peony”.
